Wind Storm Response in Denver & Fort Collins by Elements of Restoration

restoration experts in denver and fort collins

Colorado’s Front Range recently experienced an extreme wind event that brought gusts stronger than a Category 2 hurricane across the Denver metro, foothills, and northern corridor. Local National Weather Service reports and Colorado news outlets confirmed gusts exceeding 100 mph near Boulder County and throughout the Front Range — including areas between Denver and Fort Collins — as well as widespread power outages and downed trees.

Strong westerly winds swept through the region mid-December, causing damage to structures, uprooting trees, and knocking large branches onto homes and vehicles. Several communities faced power shutoffs as utility crews attempted to mitigate fire hazards caused by such dangerous wind speeds.

Massive Tree Crash Through A Roof In Fort Collins Area

One of the severe consequences of these high winds was a large tree falling directly through a residential roof near the Fort Collins area. Homeowners called Elements of Restoration when they discovered a significant breach in their roof structure after the storm passed.

Upon arrival, our team documented the damage, stabilized the structure to prevent further interior damage, and began emergency tarping. Photos from our response to this job are included in the gallery below so you can see the kind of impact strong Colorado winds can have on homes — even in areas outside the highest foothills.

Why This Happens in Denver & Northern Colorado

Colorado’s Front Range cities like Denver, Boulder, Loveland, and Fort Collins are known for foehn wind events — strong downslope winds that occur when air descends from the Rockies and intensifies. These winds can reach hurricane-force strengths under the right conditions, especially in the winter when strong pressure gradients develop. The recent storm followed this pattern, producing devastating gusts across urban and suburban communities.

Additionally, gusty conditions coupled with unseasonably dry air increases wildfire risk and leads to preemptive utility shutoffs as crews try to prevent lines from sparking fires. Residents across the Front Range felt both power interruptions and structural storm damage during this event.

Tips to Protect Your Home from High Wind Damage

If you live anywhere along Interstate 25 — especially in neighborhoods with older trees or open terrain — here are a few ways to reduce risk before the next big wind storm:

  1. Trim and Maintain Trees — Remove weak limbs that could fall on your home.
  2. Check Roof & Gutters — Loose shingles and clogged gutters make damage worse.
  3. Secure Outdoor Items — Furniture, grills, and planters can become flying hazards.
  4. Have Emergency Tarping Ready — Fast tarping prevents costly water damage after a breach.
  5. Know Your Insurance Coverage — Understand how wind damage and tree falls are covered.
